Outboard engines are marvels of engineering — powerful, compact, and exposed to some of the harshest conditions any engine can face. Saltwater splashing on external components, submersion of the lower unit, and constant vibration all take their toll. Regular outboard maintenance isn't optional in Tampa Bay's saltwater environment — it's the difference between reliable performance and getting towed back to the dock. Our certified outboard mechanics service all major brands and handle everything from 20-hour break-in services on new motors to complete powerhead rebuilds on high-hour engines.
The lower unit is where your outboard meets the water — and it's the component most vulnerable to failure. Gear oil should be changed at every 100-hour service interval, and the old oil should be inspected for water intrusion (milky appearance) or metal particles (indicating gear wear). A failing lower unit seal can allow saltwater to contaminate the gears, leading to a complete lower unit failure that costs thousands. We inspect the lower unit carefully at every service and catch problems before they escalate.
If your outboard isn't "peeing" — meaning no water stream coming from the tell-tale outlet — that's a red flag. The water pump impeller is responsible for circulating cooling water through the engine, and when it fails, overheating is minutes away. Impellers should be replaced annually in saltwater environments regardless of hours. We replace impellers, inspect water pump housings, clear blocked tell-tale passages, and ensure your outboard's cooling system is functioning properly.
For dockside diagnostic work and non-routine repairs, here's exactly how the process works — so there are no surprises from the start.
We come to your dock and diagnose the issue. There is a $175 diagnosis fee — if you approve the work, it is credited toward your final invoice. If you decide not to move forward, the visit is billed on its own and you keep the diagnosis in writing.
Based on the diagnosis, we build a written estimate and send it to you for approval through our platform. We will have a strong idea of what needs to be done — but the full picture often only becomes clear once we start taking things apart.
Once your estimate is approved and the parts arrive in-house, we schedule your job. For special-order items, we require a 50% deposit up front.
If the fix is what we anticipated, we complete the work on this visit. If we uncover something else contributing to the problem, we order the additional or replacement parts, revise the estimate, keep you updated, and schedule a second visit as quickly as possible.
When a second visit is required, we complete the service and test everything to confirm the issue is fully resolved.
When the job is done, we reconcile parts and labor to the actual amounts and send your final invoice — along with photos for your records — through our platform. Pay by ACH with no fee, or by credit card with a 3.5% processing fee.
Credited toward your invoice when you approve the work. If you pass, it is billed on its own and you keep the written diagnosis.
